First Annual Meeting of the Indian Eye Research Group – ARVO International Affiliate Chapter
The first meeting of the Indian Eye Research Group – ARVO India Chapter Meeting was held at the L V Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad, India, from July 28-29, 2012. The scientific sessions were in 10 categories: the Biology of Eye Disease, Ocular Drug Delivery, Pharmacology and Cell Based Therapy, Cornea, Lens and Uveitis, Optometry and Vision Neurosciences, Community Eye Health and Vision Rehabilitation, Retina, Glaucoma, and Oncology.
There were 10 sessions for platform presentations with eight invited talks and 52 free papers, and two poster sessions with 73 posters. Overall, there were 230 attendees from all over the country. Thirteen young research and clinical fellows received travel support and eight young researchers were awarded for best presentations in clinical and basic sciences.
The major highlights of the meeting comprised two oration lectures that were widely appreciated and generated lot of interest among Indian researchers. The Bireswar Chakrabarti Oration by Prof. John McAvoy from the University of Sydney, Australia, was on "Understanding lens development" and the D Balasubramanian Oration by Prof. Keith Martin, from the University of Cambridge, UK, was on “Stem cells for glaucoma.” A special lecture on 'Exome Sequencing' was organized by Spinco India Ltd.
The meeting was jointly organized by the L V Prasad Eye Institute and the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology under the aegis of ARVO with support from Spinco India Ltd., Perkin Elmer, Thermo Scientific, Life Technologies, and DRDO, Government of India.
