ARVO Announces Recipient of Ludwig von Sallmann Clinician-Scientist Award
Prestigious award given to promising young clinician-scientist advancing vision care
Rockville, Md. – The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) today announced Pearse Keane, PhD, is the recipient of the 2019 Ludwig von Sallmann Clinician-Scientist Award. Keane, a consultant ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, UK, is currently investigating the applications of artificial intelligence in retinal healthcare.
“Dr. von Sallmann helped make the world’s basic and clinical understanding of vison and ophthalmology decades more modern,” said ARVO Foundation Board of Governors Chair Paul Sternberg, Jr., MD, FARVO. “Dr. Keane is also advancing the vision research community by introducing a new element to retinal care as complex as artificial intelligence and developing it for practical use. We are excited to hear about the potential applications of his work at ARVO 2019 in Vancouver.”
The $1,250 award honors Ludwig von Sallmann, MD, a distinguished international ophthalmologist and ophthalmic investigator who made contributions in many fields of research and greatly increased the basic and clinical understanding of vision and ophthalmology. He served as Chief of the Intramural Program of the National Eye Institute and was an ARVO Proctor Medal recipient in 1951.
Applications reopen July 1, 2019 and close on September 1, 2019.
About Pearse Keane, PhD
Dr. Keane is a world leader in advanced ophthalmic imaging and artificial intelligence. He is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon specializing in the diagnosis and management of retinal disease with a specific interest in macular diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). He is a fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.
