The annual Advocacy Day, organized by the National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (NAEVR), was held on Feb. 8. ARVO's domestic and international advocates — including AMPC members, Advocacy and Outreach Committee members, and Science Communication Training Fellows — made nearly 40 delegation office visits, including those of new Members of the 116th Congress and members assigned to key committees with NIH funding and oversight jurisdiction.
The message to representatives was to pass a bipartisan budget deal enabling the National Institutes of Health (NIH) FY2020 funding of at least $41.6 billion and National Eye Institute (NEI) funding of $850 million, a 6.4% increase over prior year.
Advocacy Day is an annual opportunity for students and established researchers to share their science with their representatives, describe how their work and careers depend on federal funding and invite policymakers to visit their labs.
