Senior Manager, Science Advocacy and Communications

We are seeking an experienced professional with a background in advocacy, science and communications. The ideal candidate will understand the role of advocacy and public policy in advancing support for science and research. Candidates should have working knowledge of scientific research and the bench to bedside process. Additionally, candidates should have experience communicating science to various audiences including policy-makers and the public. The Senior Manager oversees ARVO’s Science Communication Fellowship, which educates young scientists on how to communicate of science to a lay audience. Additionally, he or she supports ARVO’s work to advocate for science in order to support increased funding among legislatures. The position also represents ARVO among the policy and scientific communities and helps to ensure that the vision research enterprise is understood and ultimately well-funded around the globe.

This position is part of ARVO’s Marketing and Communications team and reports to the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer. The senior manager also collaborates with staff members in other departments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Science Communications Fellows: Manages Science Communications Fellowship program in order to help young scientists from the US and around the world learn how to communicate the importance of their science and research to a lay audience.
  • Science Education: Serves as staff liaison to committees and other groups as needed to help develop and carry out education activities and extend ARVO’s influence on research policy in the U.S. and other countries as appropriate. 
  • ARVO Representative: Represents ARVO at briefings and meetings relevant to vision research funding and policy.
  • Advocacy: Works with ARVO’s partners at NAEVR/AEVR and monitors policy and other opportunities for ARVO to advocate for eye and vision science among elected officials, policy-makers and other key stakeholders.
  • Writing: Drafts and develops content for member communications related to eye and vision science.
  • Communication: Works with staff and members to develop resources to help ARVO members more effectively communicate about the importance of eye and vision science.
  • Public Relations: Supports promotion of eye and vision science and helps to translate science to various audiences.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years’ experience in communications, science communications, public relations, advocacy, public affairs or government relations, preferably for a nonprofit or science-based organization
  • Familiarity with life sciences, research or healthcare issues
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex, technical ideas in a compelling form and interact with a variety of audiences
  • Excellent organizational skills 
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines and budgets
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively as part of a team 
  • Experienced and comfortable working in various technologies and platforms including project management software, social media monitoring tools and others as needed
  • Occasional travel required (5-10%)

IT Manager

The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), headquartered in Rockville, Md., has a new opportunity for an IT expert to join our team and provide first level technology support to all ARVO departments.

ARVO is the largest and most respected eye and vision research organization in the world. ARVO supports its 12,000 members in over 75 countries as they advance research to prevent, treat and cure diseases of the eye and visual systems. This position is vital to ensuring the smooth operation of ARVO’s internal and external information and communications systems.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Assist the Chief Information Officer in all aspects of the IT department including documentation, research, planning, budgeting, and implementation of new hardware and software applications and services.
  • Manage IT related projects with internal staff as well as external vendors.
  • Develop and conduct team and individual training sessions to users as needed.
  • Document and maintain all IT procedures, protocols, policies, and system standards to ensure the security and integrity of the network.
  • Serve as primary Tier 1 support contact to staff; evaluate and document resolutions to analyze trends to prevent future problems.
  • Coordinate with vendor support contacts to resolve technical problems with desktop computing equipment and software.
  • Install, configure, and maintain laptops/desktops and printers.

Your qualifications should include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or Computer Science preferred
  • CompTIA A+ or MCS certification
  • 3-5 years of experience with tools and techniques for maintaining, troubleshooting and setting up desktops/laptops, printers, switches, router, and WAPs in Office 365 environment
  • Advanced competency with Windows 10, MS Office applications, Office365 cloud services, MS SharePoint, HTML/ASP, and Adobe Acrobat
  • Strong understanding of database structure, CRM, and AMS tools
  • Project Management experience, including managing software implementations and experience managing project schedules, tasks, and budgets
  • Well organized individual with strong written/oral communication and interpersonal skills; Ability to translate, present, and communicate technical terms and services in a non-technical under-friendly language
  • Self-directed and proactive; thinks beyond the immediate problem
  • Flexible, able to change priorities quickly, and capable of handling multiple tasks with keen attention to detail with limited supervision
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move equipment up to 50 pounds
  • Able to work extended hours on an as needed basis to fix serious technical issues or provide support for scheduled work activities.
  • Travel to support the Annual Meeting
