Envisioning Equity in Eye Care Conference CME information
Accredited Continuing Education Program Information
The Envisioning Equity in Eye Care Conference, held virtually on November 16 and 17, is an accredited continuing education activity. Session recordings are now available on demand and eligible for CME credit. There is no additional fee to claim credit.
Credit may be claimed for participating in the live web sessions and/or viewing the on-demand session recordings. However, participants may not claim credit for participating in the same session live then viewing the recording.
Instructions to receive credit and/or certificates
- Visit learning.arvo.org
- Login with your ARVO username and password. (Use the forgot password link, if needed).
- Click the title of the event (2022 Envisioning Equity in Eye Care Virtual Conference).
- Follow the onscreen instructions to add sessions.
- When complete, click the review and submit link in the upper right corner.
- Click to Finalize the record. (No changes can be made after you click Finalize).
- Complete and submit the evaluation, then click the link to return to the My events page and download your certificate.
Diplomates of the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO) can elect to have their credits submitted to the ABO on their behalf. To take advantage of that service, you will need to provide your ABO Diplomate number, your first and last name as it appears in your ABO record, and your month and day of birth within the evaluation form.
The deadline to claim credit is 11:59 EST on Dec. 31, 2022.
Statement of need
Many clinician-scientists are not aware of the social and environmental factors (“social determinants”) that result in disparate treatment of eye and vision disorders within the U.S patient population and they may lack the specialized knowledge required to effectively design and execute studies to identify and address these causes of health disparities. In addition, there is a significant lack of underrepresented minorities (URMs) within the eye and vision research and clinical care workforce resulting in less diversity of thought and experience.
Target audience
The educational design of this activity addresses the needs of researchers, clinician-scientists, ophthalmologists, ophthalmology residents, optometrists, post-doctoral fellows, PhD candidates, and graduate students seeking to learn more about social determinants of health, how to study them and how to design effective interventions within ophthalmic clinical care to address known health disparities.
Educational objectives
After participating in this CME activity, participants should be able to:
- Explain the social determinants that effect eye and vision health.
- Discuss the epidemiology of health disparities in vision care within the U.S.
- Describe how to study healthcare data and genetics to identify health disparities in vision care.
- Summarize characteristics of effective interventions to improve health equity in vision care within the U.S.
- Implement strategies to increase diversity within research or clinical teams.
- Explain how to locate and apply for health equity funding opportunities
Physician Accreditation Statement
The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
Physician Credit Designation
The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology designates this other (blend of internet live and enduring material) activity for a maximum of 6.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
International Attendees: The American Medical Association (AMA) has determined that physicians not licensed in the U.S who participate in CME activities are eligible for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.
Certificate of Participation
ARVO is accredited to offer AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ to physicians. All other participants in the accredited activity may receive a Certificate of Participation* that documents the number of accredited hours attended by following the credit claiming instructions.
*Some accrediting agencies may award equivalent Continuing Education (CE) credit when presented with a Certificate of Participation from an activity that offered AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Check with your accrediting agency for information.
Certificate of Attendance
Certificates of attendance are available to all attendees. These certificates state that one has attended the activity but does not offer credit tracking. They will be available via download from the activity web page or by sending an email request to education@arvo.org
American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO) Diplomates
Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, earns credit toward the Lifelong Learning requirement for the American Board of Ophthalmology’s Continuing Certification program. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting credit.
The Envisioning Equity in Eye Care Conference qualifies for Lifelong Learning (Part II). Credits will be reported to the ABO via the ACCME no later than January 16, 2023.
Learner data will not be shared with any entity other than the ACCME for the purpose of granting credit. Participants will be able to provide the required information for Continuing Certification credit tracking on the Participant Evaluation Form when claiming credit. By providing the required information, participants will give ARVO permission to share their learner data with the ACCME.
European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) CME/CPD requirements
European physicians can convert AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ earned from participating in this accredited continuing education activity to meet European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) CME/CPD requirements.
The American Medical Association has an agreement of mutual recognition of CME credits with the UEMS, the accreditation body for European countries. Physicians interested in converting AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ to UEMS-European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education CME credits (ECMECs) should contact the UEMS at mutualrecognition@uems.eu.
