A preview into the year ahead
ARVO journals continue to provide members and the broader vision science community a place to publish their best research and to read about the latest developments in vision and ophthalmology research. To stay up-to-date with published papers, readers can now customize their alerts by clicking on the “sign in” link at the top of any journal page and creating an account. These can include a weekly table of contents alert, as well as topic and specific article-based alerts.
This promises to be an exciting year for the journals. Starting this year, ARVO will begin publishing a cross-journal online collection of articles derived from the abstracts designated as a Hot Topic from the ARVO Annual Meeting. ARVO journal editors recognize the potential of research reported at the Meeting and invite abstract authors to submit manuscripts derived from their abstracts to the relevant ARVO journal. The 2017 Hot Topic abstract authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts based on their work to this collection before the April 25 deadline.
IOVS
Donald Hood, PhD, the new IOVS editor-in-chief, and his new team of associate editors are planning more invited content and special issues in 2018. Look for more Perspective articles, as well as special issues on dry eye (in conjunction with the Dry Eye Society of Japan), myopia (in conjunction with the International Myopia Institute) and dry AMD.
JOV
Last year, JOV saw its Impact Factor rise by 14%. After a concerted effort by editors and staff, its mean time from submission to final decision has decreased by 25% over the last two years. In January, ARVO welcomed back JOV founding editor, Andrew Watson, PhD, as editor-in-chief. Watson has recently expanded the JOV editorial board and outlined his priorities for the coming year. These include maintaining high standards of scientific excellence, preserving and enhancing the technical features and capabilities of JOV as a digital publication, ensuring that publication in the journal remains affordable for authors and protecting the journal’s long-term viability.
TVST
TVST continues to flourish under the leadership of Marco Zarbin, MD, PhD, FARVO. The number of submissions rose sharply, with 52% more manuscripts submitted in 2017 than 2016 — allowing the team of editors to identify and select the best papers to publish. TVST received its first Impact Factor of 2.221 based on its listing in the Clarivate Web of Science citation database, and is in the process of being indexed in the Elsevier SCOPUS database. In addition to cutting edge translational research articles, the journal is publishing more review articles. Recent examples include CRISPR-Cas Genome Surgery in Ophthalmology by Stephen Tsang et al.; Restoration of Cone Photoreceptor Function in Retinitis Pigmentosa, by Henry Kaplan, et al.; Algorithms for the Automated Analysis of Age-Related Macular Degeneration Biomarkers on Optical Coherence Tomography, by Robert Finger, et al.; and Biological Involvement of MicroRNAs in Proliferative Vitreoretinopathy by Hiroki Kaneko and Hiroko Terasaki.
